by Lynn Chen Joy Discipleship Ministry was the fruit of months of Bible study and prepartion by the Lord to embark on a journey none of us could have ever imagined. When we first came together as the 3rd service 8th grade girls’ Sunday school class, we dug into the Word and learned each week what it means to be a disciple of Christ. Each of the girls took turns teaching lessons during class and started consistently meeting with Jesus in the Word through Life Journaling. God really laid the foundation to the ministry by first training and eqiupping His people for the task ahead. God answered our prayer and honored our desire to serve Him, be obedient, and grow in our faith by giving us a vision to disciple the 7th grade girls. In December 2009, five mentors stepped up to be discipled and take on the challenge of discipling others. The mentors would meet every single Saturday with their teacher to study the Word, pray, learn about doctine and theology, church history, spiritual heroes, and others things to stoke the fire of their faith and to deepen their love for Christ. In turn, the mentors would reach out to their disciples and teach them what the Spirit had taught them. Each mentor mentored 3-4 7th grade girls and even though it was a very difficult task, each of them rose to the challege on God’s strength and provision and by striving to never lose sight of the cross. The hardest part of ministry often is not the task itself but the people and the relational aspects we have to navigate. Looking back on the year, it is evident how God specially equipped each mentor for her specific mentees. Our goal as mentors was to teach our mentees the importance of deeply knowing and loving God through His Word and prayer. To have them read and understand the Word for themselves, and then to teach others to do the same. We wanted to be disciple-making disciples of Christ as Jesus commanded us. By God’s grace we have finished the year and God has raised up eight new 8th grade mentors to disciple the new mentee class. It has been an incredible journey and one only possible in God alone. We recognize that the growth and all good things all came from God and that we were so privileged to have these opportunities to serve our sisters in this way. Please pray with us as we begin a new discipleship class and strive to be more like Christ. J
